The four of us returned to our hotel and unpacked a bit before Val and I headed back uptown to the train depot nearby.
Three months before our Scotland Trip, Val and I had traveled to Las Vegas to visit her niece, Laurel. Laurel had just accepted a new job in Tallinn, Estonia, and was in the midst of packing and selling furniture, plus saying goodbye to friends at her Zappos going away party. As we spent time helping her prepare for the move, we mentioned that our upcoming trip to Scotland would be much closer to Estonia than we would be in the States and a seed was planted. Six weeks later, Val received a text… “It’s official, I’m crashing your trip!”
Hard to believe, but here we were nearly 8,000 miles from Las Vegas and 1,700 miles from Tallinn, meeting Laurel at the Nairn train station. She was arriving after flying to Frankfurt, then Aberdeen, and finally, a 2-hour ride from Aberdeen on ScotRail! Perfect timing – as the train pulled up on time a few minutes after we arrived. We walked with Laurel and occasionally assisted with her heavy backpack and computer. What a coordinated rendezvous! Janis had arranged for us to have a room with a pull-out couch that made it convenient for us to host our guest! Even though we had all had a full day, we still felt like celebrating with a little scotch and chocolate in our room!
