Talent is a requirement for becoming a great golfer. But talent alone is not enough if you want to be one of the best women golfers in the world. Years of dedication and perseverance and just maybe the most talented can count themselves among the best. Earning a spot on a Solheim Cup team is confirmation that you have arrived.
Host Captain Catriona Matthew, herself a Scot, put together a team of both young and experienced players and certainly expected to depend on her leaders, Anna Nordqvist, Suzann Pettersen, and Charley Hull. She outfitted her team in the familiar Yellow and Royal Blues: hats, visors, hair bands, golf bags, turtlenecks, rain gear, umbrellas. They were certainly prepared to have the home crowd help them get the Cup back from the USA team which had won it in Des Moines in 2017.
USA Captain and Hall-of-Famer Juli Inkster returned to defend with a young team anchored by Lexi Thompson, Jessica and Nelly Korda, but missing her steady stalwarts: Stacy Lewis (back), Michelle Wie (wrist), plus Brittany Lincicome and Gerina Pillar, both new moms. Decked out in their stylish Red/White/Blue vesture, this year’s team is talented and ready for the matches on “away” soil!
The first two days involve foursomes (alternate shot) and four-ball (best-ball) formats, culminating in Sunday’s twelve singles matches. Everyone on both teams plays in Sunday’s finals, and this year, it was a tournament director’s dream as it went down to the FINAL PUTT on the 18th hole!
